Every power struggle comes down to the same fear: losing control. In this sermon on Matthew 21:23–32, the religious leaders corner Jesus in the temple with a question — where does your authority come from? — but they aren't after the truth. They're after a way to be rid of him, because his authority threatens the religion and the standing they've built. So Jesus turns the question back on them, draws a confession out of their silence, and tells a parable about two sons: one who says no and goes anyway, one who says yes and never does. Then comes the line that undoes them — the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom ahead of them. Not because sin got renamed or swept aside, but because the word of the Father caught up with them, the way it catches up with you.

Matthew 18:15-20 is often known as a conflict-resolution plan for the church, but what if Jesus is doing far more than handing us an HR policy? In this sermon, we look at why we'd rather talk about sin in the abstract, or in hushed tones behind someone's back, than name it face to face, and why Jesus refuses to let us keep up appearances or nurse our grudges. Here Christ puts the keys of the kingdom into the hands of his church, not to shame or punish, but so sin can be named and forgiveness actually spoken. Even the one who remains "as a Gentile and a tax collector" is exactly the kind of sinner Jesus came to eat with. And where two or three gather in his name, he promises to be there, speaking a word that doesn't just manage your burdens but takes them away.

"Pick up your cross and follow me" usually gets heard as a challenge, a bar to clear before you can call yourself a follower. But what if Jesus isn't issuing a directive at all? In this sermon on Matthew 16:21–28, Peter goes from confessing Jesus as the Messiah to rebuking him in a matter of verses, because the Messiah Jesus describes, the one who must suffer and die, isn't the one Peter wanted. His "Lord, forbid it!" exposes something in every one of us: no one wants to go to the cross with Jesus. Yet what the old Adam hears as a threat, Jesus speaks as a promise. The cross is not a project to undertake but a death, and those who are baptized into his death are brought through it into resurrection by the one who has already gone ahead.

Matthew 16:13-20 "Who do people say that I am?" is an easy question to answer — it's just a report on the word around town. "Who do you say that I am?" is another matter entirely. In this sermon we trace that shift from the abstract to the personal, from Jesus as one more thing we tack onto the identity we're building for ourselves (teacher, role model, life coach, good luck charm) to the confession Peter makes: "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." That confession isn't something Peter works out on his own — it's given. And it's on that word, spoken by God to one sinner and then to another, that Christ builds his church. Who you are isn't something you have to construct. It's something already spoken over you.
